| Fundraising & Events In order to help Daniel, we have created a support network (Family and Friends of Daniel McGowan) to help fund Daniel’s legal representation and education and to raise awareness about his case. We're in the process of planning a number of events in various locations. If you are interested in planning an event or have any ideas on what else we could do, please email friendsofdanielmcg@yahoo.com. Also, feel free to send us any pictures from past events. NEXT EVENTS
Friday, April 18, 2008: An Earth Day Benefit for the Pacific
Northwest's Old-Growth Forests and Daniel McGowan
What: Music, Food, Fun, and More When: 8 PM, Friday, April 18th Where: 1087 Broadway (In Brooklyn, between Dodworth and Lawton Streets, above Goodbye Blue Monday-- see below for directions) Cost: $7-$10, Suggested Donation (this is a benefit, so please be prepared to make a donation) Join us on Friday, April 18th for an evening of revelry to support political prisoner Daniel McGowan and the forests he fought to defend. The evening will be filled with food, drinks (including fresh juice and spirits), music, vegan treats, a video installation, carousing, a raffle, information tables, and socializing. Among the bands performing will be: Your 33 Black Angels (Ol' time rock 'n roll, but this ain't Bob Segar) Darren Deicide (Roots music to keep you moving) Oogle Orphanage (If it was easy to describe, they wouldn't be playing it) The Forthrights (Think Desmond Dekker Meets Toots & The Maytals, only younger) Shit Lovin' Angels (Streetwise punk with a heart of gold) We will also be a raffle, the prize being a hand-screened print by Borf. The print was designed and screened specifically for Daniel and is limited to a printing of 50. You can see the print at http://www.justseeds.org/other_artists/04borf.html Tickets will be available at the door. Directions: By Subway Take the J train to the Kosciusko Street stop. From the station walk on Broadway toward Kosciusko Street and Dekalb Avenue (away from Kossuth Place and Patchen Avenue). About two blocks up on the left is 1087. By Bicycle Take the Williamsburg Bridge and continue down Broadway. Once you have crossed Lawton Street, look for 1087 on your right. This Earth Day event is not just a benefit for Daniel, but also for groups that are fighting to save the very areas that motivated him to take action in the first place. All proceeds will be split between Daniel's education fund and the following groups that he selected: Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center KS Wild focuses on the exceptional wildlands of the Siskiyou Crest and the roadless areas along the Wild Rogue River. They strive to protect remaining native forests and their wild inhabitants, water and aquatic eco-systems, as well as permanently protect and restore threatened and endangered species in the region. Blue Mountains Biodiversity Project BMBP's mission is to increase regional and national awareness of the Blue Mountains ecosystems, to insure the protection for and reintroduction of diverse native wildlife species, to promote ecologically sound restoration, and address the root causes of ecological and community instability. Cascadia Wildlands Project The CWP uses a combination of education, organizing, agitation, litigation, advocacy, and collaboration to defend wild places against destructive resource extraction and promote sustainable, restoration-based forestry. CWP focuses on Cascadia-- the lush, old-growth forested region extending from Northern California the Southeastern Alaska and home to many cherished and unique plant and non-human animal species.
