The Legacy of the Panthers On January 23, eight former Black Panthers were arrested on charges related to the 1971 killing of a San Francisco police officer. Similar charges were thrown out after it was revealed that police used torture to extract confessions when some of these same men were arrested in New Orleans in 1973.
This is the exact legacy of repression of social justice movements that the Political Prisoners Calendar has always worked to raise awareness of. Herman Bell, one of the political prisoners who collaborates with us on the calendar, is one of the accused. He writes:
Cointelpro's "pattern of manipulation and lies, continuing into the present, indicates something more than the ordinary corruption and racism of everyday law enforcement. It can be understood only in terms of the power of the political movement that [we] were part of, and the intensity of the government's efforts to destroy that movement and to disillusion and intimidate future generations of young activists."
John Bowman, who was featured in the June 2007 section of the calendar, "How the U.S. Destroyed the Black Panther Party and Continues to Persecute its Veterans," was also accused in this case. He passed away in December, after a long and strenuous fight against a Grand Jury. Visit www.cdhrsupport.org.
